Yale was founded by Linus Yale Sr., who was very passionate about locks, especially the ones used in banks. From that interest, he began designing and manufacturing high-security locks at his Yale business in New York.
Linus Yale Sr. began to specialize in high-security bank locks and patented the combination lock, in 1843, the safe in 1849, a bank lock in 1853, a vault and safe door bolt in 1856. Mr. Yale Sr. did excellent lock designs, but the most remarkable work he did, was the pin tumbler lock in 1861. Inspired by the Egyptian pin lock mechanism consisting of pins with different sizes use with the correct key. Linus Yale Jr. joined the family business in 1850.
Following his father’s footsteps, Linus Yale Jr. invented an alternative design in 1862, the monitor bank lock for safes and vaults. This invention changed the whole locking system of banks, from dial to combination locks. We can say that Yale Jr. contributed to modern combination locks, as companies got inspiration by the monitor bank lock.
In 1865, Yale Jr. picked up where his father’s pin and tumbler left off, his design incorporated a smaller, flat key with serrated edges, that, when inserted, move two internal sets of pins into position so that when the key turned, the lock would open. In other words, he perfected and patented the Yale cylinder pin tumbler, which is his greatest and most important invention.
He also created other lock innovations, including improvements to the clock lock, and he receive the patent for the double combination lock.
Yale Jr. along with his business partner Henry Towne established the Yale & Towne Company in 1868, and employed 35 people. In 1879 they introduced a new line of padlocks. Also during this time, Yale & Towne purchased Norton door closer company and H. and T. Vaughan Ltd, at this point, “Yale locks” became the popular term in the UK for pin-tumbler household lock and keys.
The British Yale created bonds with the motor industry and supplied locks to various manufacturers until the early thirties. In the 1960s a revival of activity in the motor onwards when security fitters adopted its ‘M69’ window lock as a simple add-on to prevent theft. Yale continued supplying all lock needs, this time to Rolls-Roy’s, until the early 1990s when the electronic devices started their boom.
In the 20th century, the Yale & Towne Company expanded worldwide and employed more than 12,000 people. In the 20th century, the company expanded through purchases, acquisitions and joint partnerships. This made Yale locks popular across the world.
In 2000 Assa Abloy Group acquired Yale and from that moment on, the brand became an important part of the global leader in door security solutions. Yale never stops advancing. By incorporating new technologies in their solutions, Yale stays ahead as “the world’s favorite lock”.
