Sansung was founded by Lee Byung-chull in 1938, It started as a trading company based in Taegu, Korea. The small company of only 40 employees started as a grocery store, trading and exporting goods produced in and around the city, like dried Korean fish and vegetables, as well as its own noodles.
The company grew and soon expanded to Seoul in 1947 but left once the Korean War broke out. After the war, Lee started a sugar refinery in Busan that was called Cheil Jedang, before expanding into textiles and building the (then) largest woolen mill in Korea.
The successful diversification became a growth strategy for Samsung, which rapidly expanded into the insurance, securities, and retail business. Samsung was focused on the redevelopment of Korea after the war with a central focus on industrialization.
In the 1960’s the Samsung Group entered the electronics industry confidently. Very soon Samsung was able to release its first product which was a black and white television set. By now it has more than 6 divisions each focussing on individual products like the semiconductor, telecommunications, hardware etc.
In the following years soon it acquired telecommunications giant Hanguk Jeonja Tongs in 1980. They started producing telephone, fax machines, switchboards with great success and created the base for their large-scale productions in the years to come.
In the 1980’s all these production units came under one company named Samsung Electronics Co., Ltd. The company began producing color TVs, personal computers, VCRs, and tape recorders. This was also the decade Samsung started exporting more of its products to North America.
Samsung teamed up with BP in 1989 to form Samsung BP Chemicals. The company sells chemical products in Korea.
