A router is a hand tool or power tool that a worker uses to rout (hollow out) an area in relatively hard material like wood or plastic. Routers are mainly used in woodworking, especially cabinetry. Routers are typically handheld or fastened cutting end-up in a router table.

Machine routers are extremely versatile machines. They are generally used to cut grooves in natural wood and man-made boards. They have a cutter that rotates at high speed - as the operator pushes the router forwards the cutter removes the wood in its path.

1. The mains electric cord is carried over the shoulder of the operator so that it does not get in the way of the router as it is pushed forward.

2. It is good practice to use a circuit breaker. This will cut power if any electrical fault in the router is detected. 

3. Always wear safety goggles to protect the eyes. Never operate equipment like this without eye protection. Wear a face mask to prevent breathing in the dust that is created.

4. Hold both handles when using the router. It is possible to switch the router on/off with the thumb of the left hand.

5. Push the router forward slowly. 

6. Always seek instruction / training from an appropriately qualified instructor before using any tools, especially power tools.

Go through the routing motions before you turn your router on, making sure the height of your chair works with the job, that no cords get in the way, that your clamps are positioned properly, and that your hair and clothes are tucked away.

Routers are very noisy and messy — make sure you have eye and ear protection so the dust and noise don’t impair you.

Use the “climbing cut” — moving the router in the direction of the bit rotation — for sections that are susceptible to tear out. But be aware of the likelihood of the router pulling away fast.

Know the wood you are cutting into. Listen to your tool, pay attention to how it looks, smells, sounds, and is behaving. When routing properly, the router should be stable and steady, with no howling, jumping, or burning smells.
