CHARACTERISTICS OF A PILLOW

IT PERFECTLY FITS YOUR SLEEPING POSITION

Whether you are side, back or stomach sleeper, a different density and size of pillow is needed. A good pillow corresponds with its volume and density to your sleeping position.

IT IS DURABLE

It means that it does not lose its shape and firmness and you sleep on it as comfortably as when you just purchased it.

IT IS HYGIENIC

A good pillow should provide proper ventilation and resist moisture retention, preventing itself from bacteria, mold and bed bugs. Talalay latex pillows can be a good example of it, since it is highly breathable thanks to its round and open cellular structure. It is also washable.

After sleeping on a good pillow you feel rested and energized, no neck or head aches. A good pillow should also be safe and hypoallergenic.

A good pillow allows you to wake up refreshed after a good night sleep without the usual pain in the neck you usually experience.

TYPES OF PILLOWS

some of the types of pillow includes;

Reading Pillow

A reading pillow is handy for sitting up in bed to read a book or watch a movie. The pillow is styled after an armchair with a supportive back and two armrests that provide stability while you’re sitting upright in bed.

Pregnancy Pillow

A pregnancy pillow wraps around the body to provide support for pregnant women who can’t get comfortable sleeping on their sides. Pregnancy pillows are U-shaped and keep the body
aligned and comfortable.

Leg Support Pillow

A leg support pillow is usually a cylinder-shaped or wedge-shaped pillow that may be placed at the bend of the knees when you’re lying down. Leg support pillows are effective at relieving muscle and joint pain in and around the knees, as well as taking pressure off the lower back.

Contour Pillow

Contour pillows are pre-shaped to cradle your head and support the curvature of your neck. Usually made from memory foam, contour pillows hold their shape longer than traditional pillows and are perfect for people who need neck and upper spine support.

Wedge Pillow

A wedge pillow promotes comfortable sleep at a slight upright angle. Usually made of firm foam or memory foam, a bed wedge may be beneficial for those with back problems. It also helps create a comfortable upright position for reading and watching movies in bed.

THINGS TO CONSIDER WHEN PURCHASING A PILLOW

1. The Thickness

The fill material of a pillow helps in determining its support level, but the thickness of your pillow is also vital. In the market, you are offered various pillows, which are featured according
to their thickness, too. There are some pillows that are more suitable than others based upon your sleeping position. Here are some tips on how to find the perfect pillow for your particular
sleeping position:

  • If you sleep on your sides, you should have a thicker pillow.

  • If you are a stomach sleeper, a thinner pillow is for you

  • If you sleep on your back, the right pillow for you will fall somewhere in between thick and thin.

Sometimes, it is the position of the neck that is important for you to get better sleep. While sleeping, your neck should be aligned in a neutral position with your spine.

2. Caring instructions

Before you make a purchase, check the caring instructions on the pillow’s label, and ensure that you are willing to take care of it as recommended. Most of them are machine washable, but may vary in their specific caring instructions, including:

  • Some instruct not to wash in front load machines.

  • Some can only be dry-cleaned.

  • Some allow only spot treating.

You will be able to use your pillow for a long time if you wash it two or three times a year and can keep it safe and clean with the use of a pillow protector.

3. Pillow Sizes

The size of your pillow will greatly affect your sleep quality. When the pillow complements your bed size, it looks great and provides support no matter how much you move in your sleep.
The three most common pillow sizes are standard, queen, and king. Bed pillows are usually made to complement standard bed sizes.
