Levelling staff - The perfect tool to achieve your measurement goal

A level staff is a measuring rod which land surveyors sight through a telescope to calculate the slope, or difference in elevation, between two locations. A level staff, also called levelling rod, is a graduated wooden or aluminium rod, used to determine the difference in height between points or heights of points above or below the surface of the earth. The lower end of the rod is shod with metal to protect it from wear and usually point of zero measurement from which the graduations are numbered. 

They can be a single long rod, but surveying land on foot requires some measure of portability. A lightweight aluminum level staff may have nested sections which telescope out and lock for height adjustment. Wooden types may be made in separate sections that connect end-to-end and lock, as needed. All have graduated numeric markings, either imperial or metric measurements, in large, visible print. They are, basically, very long rulers with a functional resolution of about 0.1 inch (2.5mm).

Most of the staffs are sectional and so can be adjusted in length to allow for easy storage and transport. The aluminium staffs adjust with telescopic section inside each other, whilst the wooden versions use sliding slip joints or connections.

Uses of a  Levelling staff

 1. To prepare a contour map for fixing sites for reservoirs, dams etc. & to fix the alignment of roads, railways, irrigation canals etc. 

2. To determine the altitudes of different important points on a hill or to reduced levels of different points on or below the surface of the earth. 

3. To prepare a longitudinal & cross section of a project (roads, railways, irrigation canals etc) in order to determine the volume of earth work. 

4. To prepare a layout map for water supply , sanitary or drainage schemes.

Types of Levelling Staffs

There are two different types of level staffs, which correspond to who is determining the measurement. A “target staff” is read by the rod man, the individual holding the level staff. Another type, a “self-reading staff," is read by the instrument man. The latter, sometimes called a “speaking rod,” is sighted and recorded by the individual looking through a telescope mounted on a tripod from afar.
